ACP – MEETING 30-31.7.2022

Text - John Blake

Very many thanks for looking after me so well at the ACP meeting. Special thanks to Anna-Mari Toikka for meeting us to the airport and then taking us to the showground and hotel and not least for taking us to the hotel in Helsinki. Also special thanks to Arto Hilander for taking us out for a meal on Sunday evening. I did have a most enjoyable weekend and then you gave me the most wonderful model of a Collie. Very many thanks for that. It has a pride of place in our lounge.

Now for the dogs at the show.
It is a long time since I did any judging so I was a bit out of practice. However the dogs ,and I judged
the dogs, were very nice. A little bit difficult to place as they were all out of coat so had lost condition
as well. I was very pleased with the shoulders as all were correct in this department.
This is a big concern in the UK. Too many very straight shoulders so that when they move the front is
lower than the back. Movement was very good on almost all.

My biggest concern was rather a lack of flat skulls and some rather round eyes. But really they were
nearly all better then those I see in the UK according to the breed standarn. How do you get your
tricolours to be so black? Here in the UK the tricolours are prone to having brown patches.

You are all wellcome to come to the UK and see our dogs. I am very much looking forward to your next
ACP show.

Text - Miranda Blake

We finally made it! After two difficult years for everyone, it was such a relief to get back to ”normal”.
The ACP meeting was postponed for two years but the ACP discovered and used online dogshows
brilliantly to fill the gap and maintain interest. In fact, it was great to see new faces and plenty of
younger people at Vääksy.

Our good friend Lorraine Quince, of the Karafaye kennel in Scotland, travelled with us and drove down
from Scotland the night before, as we has an early start and a 3 hour drive to Gatwick airport.
She had booked her flights separately to us but had managed to book her seats next to ours
– so we had fun travelling together. It was so wonderful not to wear masks at the airport or on the plane,
and not to worry about Covid tests or paperwork - let´s hope it stays that way!

Anne-Mari Toikka very kindly met us at the airport and dad was very impressed with her electric car!
around 1 hour 20 minutes to drive to the hotel in Vääksy, and what a beautiful view of the lakes!
The club had organized a lovely room with lots of treats and we chilled before dinner on the balcony with
a glass of wine - Lorraine as well.

It was lovely to meet folk at dinner, though I was trying not to be too friendly, as I never like to socialise
too much before the judging! Anyway, we were all tired after our long journey, so we took advantage of
the 2 hour time difference and had an early night!

Saturday morning started with the traditional Karellian pie and egg butter for breakfast. The weather was
cloudy but perfect for collies, around 20 degrees, with showers forecast for midday. Judging started at
10am - we were so pleased with the entry of 63, after two such difficult years, as we have had a big
drop in UK show entries.

After formal intrpductions we began judging, the handling classes together, which was great fun. It was
wonderful to see the children working with their dogs, some were really looking carefully and trying
hard. The adult competition was made a litle trickier by asking the handlers to move in a T, which meant
they should swap the lead between their hands several times. Everyone was very sporting and what
super prizes were given to all. I really enjoyed the Brace or Pairs class - some were really well-matched
and very well behaved.

I loved the colour classes, as it was not the whole dog I was looking at, just specifically the coat colour.
With the tricolour class I was looking for dark blue skin and rich tan – as the dogs were all jet black with
correct harsh, straight topcoats it was really difficult. The sables were easier as I love a rich mahogany
colour with red tones, and I found some beauties. The blue merle class was probably the easiest to
judge, as it is so hard to get the perfect clear silvery blue colour, and then just small splashes of black.
All those placed in the colour classes were top quality colours.

Next, I had fun with the best movement and tail class - I sent them round first and dismissed those who
lifted their tails too high. Then forward and back and I dismissed those who were a li]le cow hocked or
crossing their front feet. I still had a few left, so I sent them round together and looked for forward
reach, rear drive and steady top lines. The winners were all outstanding movers.

Dad then took over judging for the males and he fell deeply in love with a 5 month sable baby calles
Carnoustie's Heracles, and he awarded him best male and best puppy dog.

Then we stopped for lunch, and the heavens opened! By the time it was my turn the rain has stopped,
and I had a great afternoon judging the girls. I was so impressed with overall quality, and I could really see the influence of the dogs we have exported - especially Percy and now Dom. My best bitch was Ruu
(Black Elles Non Stop Drifting) – she was the complete package – such outstanding quality in head,
construction and movement. She had the finish and maturity the the 2nd best bitch lacked – but she was
my head and expression winner from earlier (correction; she is a litter sister of that winner), and a
daughter of Dom and Ruu - so one for the future. I must say that after having judged the bitches at Crufts
this year, my first 4 best bitches were better then my main winners there. Well done Finland and ACP!

Dad and I agreed on our final winners - Ruu as BIS and the puppy as Reserve and Best Puppy.

It was so interesting to see the progeny classes – something we do not have in the UK, which is a
great pity as they showcase the stud dog so well. It was great to see the quality these dogs are
producing, and that many of the offspring were better than the sire - only a truly great stud dog
can do that.

This was apparent in the Kennel class, as the qualities of the breeding shone through.
After being in the UK where most exhibitors import from Europe rather than breed themselves, it was
reftreshing and a relief to see that you in Finland are breeding so well.

Once we had finished judging we went to have a freshen up ready for the evening - and what an evening
it became! When someones loses their shoes in your room you know it was a good night…

The dinner was lovely, and father was so thrilled with the collie model Eero had organised. I must thank
the ACP for the wonderful gifts too. After the dinner we had a party in our room… great fun! It was 2am
when it finally finished.

Next morning I put my teacher hat on and showed presentations on the Breed standard and the History
of the breed, ably translated by fellow school teacher Minna. After lunch we went outside for some
practical lessons on presentation and handling. I also showed folk how I use my hands when I am
judging - what to feel for and how to do it and I asked them to pracKce on their dogs at home
- so I hope they have been doing their homework!

In the evening Anna-Mari took us back to Helsinki to the Flamingo hotel and we were so delighted with
our lovely room and a chilled bottle of wine. We had a lovely dinner at the Italian restaurant and were
watching our phones to see how the English ladies were hetting on in the football final. They won
- hooray!

Next morning we were up very early to be in the airport by 6am for our 8am flight - all went quickly and we were back home by 1.30pm. Lorraine stayed the night and we had a great time looking at photos and
discussing our wonderful time with all of you.

Thank you so much for your faith in our line - you keep us motivated to carry on here in the UK!
Thanks to our wonderful stewards on Saturday, and to the folk who organised all the prizes,
and to the committee for their dedication.

We look forward to seeing you again - and if you are in the UK at any time, please let us know
and you are always welcome at Corydon.

Miranda's Finnish summer 2014!

Text - Miranda Blake

Well, what an incredible few weeks.... ACP gathering, ICS conference and WDS. A great way to see amazing dogs and collie friends from all round the world - my perfect summer break!

ACP 26.-27.7.14

It is incredible to think that this group has been formed for 18 years now, where has the time gone?
It is always a great pleasure to participate as an assessor at these occasions, to see how the collies have developed since the last gathering, and give advice as to where to go next. We are all trying to aim for the same thing - a beautiful dog that fits the breed standard, but that can also be strong enough mentally and physically to be able to be used for so many different purposes really successfully.

For me, this ACP has been the best ever, for many reasons. The venue was fantastic, a great facility in a beautiful setting that was so close to Helsinki. Certainly the most beautiful background to a show ring that I have experienced. The weather was incredibly hot, but there was plenty of shade for the dogs, and litres of water for me! The amount of trophies and prizes for the exhibitors was super, what a great job the ACP committee have done!

I travelled with a friend of mine, Dawn Muir (Rayawna collies, UK). She had never been to Finland and she was so impressed by everything she experienced, as was I.  We received such a warm welcome when we arrived, and we were looked after so well during our whole stay. Such fantastic hospitality. Even when we were sent to prison!

But what impressed me the most was the improvement in the head qualities of the young dogs. I remember 3 years ago at the last gathering I was explaining about the problems in heads that I had found. Wide, deep back skulls, with long fine forefaces and long sliding stops plus light coloured eyes. This time, I only found those problems in some of the older dogs. Normally when I judge the junior and intermediate classes, anywhere in the world I dread it, as the quality of the dogs in these classes is usually poor. But not here! In the young dog and bitch classes, the overall quality was excellent. Heads were more balanced, with beautifully shaped and placed dark eyes, giving alert, intelligent and sweet expressions. The movement was also generally outstanding. Such a great boost for the future of the collie in Finland.

It was also wonderful to see so many young people and children participating. In the UK it is rare to see children at collie shows, and most of the exhibitors are pensioners.

Back to the dogs.... It was super to see the Corydon parade, and to see how beautifully looked - after and happy the dogs were. Percy did not remember me at all, which I was so pleased about - it means that he is perfectly happy in his new life. It was so nice to see beautiful Mona, Uni and Muru as well as new young tri boy Lord.

I loved watching the handing classes, there were  some very promising (and cute) new youngsters really enjoying their work, and some did a better job than the adults! I was glad I did not have to judge those classes! Some very difficult decisions had to be made!

It was fun to judge the brace classes, to see if the dogs were a matching pair and could they work well together. It is something that takes a lot of practice...

The colour classes were good fun. The tri colours were so difficult as they were all jet black with rich tans and blue skins. It just came down to coat texture and condition. The sables again were so hard, but I was lucky to have the beautiful mahogany colours in both the dogs and the bitches. I was a little disappointed with the blue Merle's though. There were not many of them, and there was not an outstanding clear silvery blue with small black markings and a rich tan. Maybe that could be the next thing to work on.

The movement and tail class was interesting. I started by checking the tail length and if the  end of the tail bone did not reach to the hock joint, then I dismissed the dog immediately. Then if the tail was set and carried too high, more dogs were sent out. That just left me with the movement to look at. I was looking for a fit dog with good muscles who could run without the shoulders rolling, with good forward reach and powerful rear drive, yet keeping a level top line. I found some excellent movers!
The head and expression class was more subjective, as everyone has their own idea of a perfect expression. But light coloured eyes and unbalanced heads were dismissed early. I was left with some wonderful collies, and again some difficult decisions had to be made. But looking back at the catalogue I found that many of those who were placed highly were in the pedigrees of the main winners.
There were some fantastic groups in both the breeders classes. I really enjoyed the progeny classes too, and could really see the influence of the sires not just in the dog progeny class, but in the whole gathering.
It was great to finally meet and assess Pahlex Make Me A Million. What a handsome young male, such top quality, no wonder he has done so well. To be critical I would like him to just have a little more length of leg, but I was very impressed and happy to award him Best Male and BOS. BM2 was a son of the WVW14 Pahlex Dollar N Dime, Minhir Such A Story From DK, and had the same fantastic mahogany colour and beautiful clean head as his father. He was just not quite as firm behind on  the move as the winner. BM3 was a really promising young tri from the 9-15 months class, Bluemeadows Just Give Me A Reason. He was a lovely-headed dog with a super flat skull,  dark eye and great expression. BM4 was my BIS from 3 years ago, Kangasvuokon Gordon, such a lovely expression. BM5 was the outstanding 11 year old veteran Darkside's No Black Talks, an upstanding noble collie in wonderful condition for his age, and really showing his heart out, even in the heat.

The bitches on the following day did not disappoint either. The Best Bitch class was probably my highlight. In fact, the young tricolour Black Sara's Barbi was BB1 and went onto BIS. I loved her correct top quality feminine head and expression. she reminded me of Corydon Kittycat.  Her movement was effortless yet powerful with such a perfect level topline and low set tail. I would have preferred better presentation but her coat was at that difficult state of just starting to moult. BB2 was another I had seen lots of pictures of, and finally met, Kangasvuokon Starships. A very sweet quality-headed bitch that could win well anywhere in Europe. She was more finished in outline than the winner, but not as strong in rear movement. BB3 was the sable Scottail Primadonna, a really elegant bitch who just needed a little more stop. BB4 was imported  from the UK, Mejola Hand Maid, in beautiful coat and condition, with a lovely body shape for a junior. BB5 was the very elegant blue Stoorybook's Petula Clark. Not quite in the coat of the others, but had to be in the final five with her shape and movement.

The evening presentations were well attended and thanks to Minna for her translating! It was great to be able to share pictures and knowledge in a professional conference setting, and I hope some of the material was useful.

It was lovely to relax afterwards with the lakeside barbecue, so nice to catch up with old friends and make some new ones!  Thank you ACP so much for the beautiful WDS jacket! I was so excited about going to my first WDS.

After the final day of judging the ACP sent me to prison! Actually, an old nineteenth century prison that had been recently turned into a hotel. It was an amazing experience! The rooms were made from two cells, but very modern inside. The corridor was still just like the real prison, but with added carpets on the floor. The restaurant was downstairs with no windows at all, and the food was served onto metal plates and dishes, with tin mugs to drink from! The food was certainly much better than bread and water! The staff all wore black and white striped uniforms, and you could buy handcuffs in the hotel shop! The location was perfect, just by the ice breaking ships, with a beautiful walk round the harbour to the main market place. We took a boat tour the next morning and learned about the history of Helsinki, then did some souvenir shopping in the market and found a lovely waterside cafe for a morning coffee and something sweet.

I had to get back to the Uk to organize the East Anglian Collie Association championship show, the next weekend, with 111 rough and smooth collies entered and my father and Lene Newman (Phreelancer) judging. The rough dog CC and BOB went to a Percy grandson, brother of my BB4, called Mejola I Am Persuasive.

ACP August 2011

It is always a huge honour to be invited by ACP to assess the Corydon-related collies in Finland. My father and I, and my mother before, are so proud to have a group of people in another country who agree with what we aim for in our wonderful breed. I think ACP is unique – certainly in Collies, and probably in all breeds – so be very proud of yourselves!

Maxine and I are great friends from many years, and we really looked forward to travelling and judging together – it was our first time.

The flights all went to plan, but the weather did not – as it was really raining hard that Friday evening in Kuopio! Our accommodations were super – we could not believe we had a sauna, a balcony for Max to smoke on and an extra bedroom for her to snore in!!! Perfect. There were wonderful home made foods and gifts waiting for us – and so much wine we really needed a huge party.

The next day was a mix of weather – fine while I judged and wet for Max!! The ring was huge and flat, so we could get a really good look at movement and shape.

The entry was excellent for a one day event – certainly any more would have been difficult to judge and critique to the standards we wished to work to.

We were very impressed with the overall soundness and movement of the collies – they had plenty of muscle and we only found one bitch very over weight. One problem we found was a lack of rear angulation – possibly caused by too much walking/running exercise. Our collies exercise in a field in a large group for 2 hours twice a day (weather permitting) this encourages lots of play – jumping, pulling, turning and short, fast bursts of speed. We find that builds the correct angulation and muscles for the show ring, and for their health.

We really liked our 5 best males, and thought they all had excellent qualities to pass on as stud dogs. Our top 5 bitches also had head qualities we were looking for, which hopefully they will pass on. We were also impressed with the other bitches in the 9-15 month class, and thought they were very promising.

Judging the heads from an English specialist view, we found most of the expressions lacking in quality. This was due to incorrect eye shape (many were quite round, not almond) and deep back skulls, but long, fine fore faces, with a long sliding stop. Our top winners had correct almond eye shape and moulded, rounded forefaces which joined the back skulls smoothly, without bumps. Their back skulls were not deep either, so the bone structure was correct, which allowed the eyes to be correct shape and size, so the expression was what the standard asks for.

We had some interesting discussions on these points after the lovely dinner on Saturday evening. Expression and head qualities are so important, and it is difficult to explain without live models. If you want to find out more, get Mia Ejerstad’s latest book on the standard, as it does give clear examples of how the wrong bone structure affects expression. In the UK we have far more specialist collie judges, so we do take more care with heads and expressions.

Thank you once again for hosting a wonderful weekend – I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I know Max did too. It’s great to know that there are so many folk who appreciate all our hard work over so many years to keep breeding to the Standard of the best breed of dog!!

A Few words from the judges

First of all may I thank you everybody who looked after us and worked so hard to make the show a Big success. The showground and judging ring were probably the best I have ever been to. It was wonderful to have such a big, flat and grassy ring. It enabled all of the dogs to move very well, and made it easy for us to judge movement. And talking of movement, we were just amazed at how well most of the dogs did move. We did not see one cow hock, nor did we see one who plaited in front. So different from our country where nearly all of the exhibits are cow hocked and plait in front. In fact afterwards we were in total despair as to what is happening to the breed in the UK. All we get are short bodies, short necks and short movement with very deep stops. They look more like Border Collies than Rough Collies. The standard of the Rough Collies states that the dog should be elegant, and luckily nearly all of the Collies we saw on Saturday and Sunday were elegant, with long bodies and long necks. They looked beautiful. I have to say that the 2/4 year old bitch class was probably the best class that I have ever judged. I was thrilled to find so many wonderful bitches in just one class. It was much, much better than the open bitch class at Crufts that I judged in 2003. I think that the winner of that class would have struggled to be placed in the 2/4 year class on Sunday.

Many of the dogs that I judged on Saturday were not in Show condition, but of course they were just pets. But even so they would (if I had been judging) have been placed very highly in the UK. So many of them I wanted to bring back to the UK and get them into proper show condition, when I am sure that they would become easy UK Champions. There are still some judges who like an elegant Collie.

The young dog that we made Best in Show is quite outstanding. He must have a wonderful future. He is everything that I look for Rough Collie. A really nice head with good ears, and a wonderful eyes, which gives him an expression to die for. It is so difficult to get that good eye and expression in a tricolour. And that neck, it just went on for ever. I just hope that his owners do not exercise him too much as he needs to grow into that big body of his.

The best bitch was a completely different type, but I loved her head which was really the best in the show. She was not as elegant as some but she moved extremely well and her coat colour is exceptional. I really preferred the second best bitch, but she was in her summer clothes and on the day did not look quite so good.

I would just like to mention the young man who Maxine made best Junior Handler on Sunday. I don’t think that I have ever seen a Collie better handled than this bitch. Se is a very lovely bitch and has a great future, but he made her a lot better by his expertise. He is very welcome to handle all of my dogs as he is much better at it than me.

Finally I would like to thanks all of the breeders who have nred truly to the Corydon Type. You have done a truly amazing job, and I thinks that your Collies have improved a lot since I was last over in Finland, and that was just 2 years ago.

We both arrived in Manchester safely to find that it was raining, so we brought the Helsinki weather with us. Or maybe it is still raining in Helsinki?

All the best and again many, many thanks to everybody.

John Blake & Phreelancer Phrosty Moon Over Corydon

WEEKEND IN FINLAND

I am writing this, and it is raining. And it rained non-stop from when I left home very early on the Friday morning, to when I arrived home on the Monday afternoon. What had I done to deserve this, and what had the organisers done? We shall to learn for next time, so that we will get unbroken sunshine. And surely for the tenth anniversary the weather must be very much on its best behaviour.

However, I really enjoyed my stay, because everyone was so welcoming and friendly, and the dogs were good to judge, the hotel was nice and friendly in a most lovely setting, which I am sure would be quite beautiful in sunshine. Your country is blessed so many really lovely lake settings. (According to the magazine I was reading in the airplane coming over Finland you have 188.000 lakes). I am surprised that you have any dry land at all, and on this weekend you most certainly did not have any. Now to the dogs. You were able to bring more than 130 Collies for me to look at. A wonderful achievement, and they were all so good and typical for the breed. Something I would not find anywhere else.

Here I would like to say a big thank you to all you breeders, as you are really looking after the future of the breed, and not just breeding a type to suit to judges. It amazes me that breeders in many other countries, including the UK, have forgotten what the breed was bred to do (herd and look after sheep) and now only breed a type of collie that they think the judge (in their ignorance) will like. All breeders should be breeding Collies that will be able to do the job that they were originally intended to do. The Collies I saw at the weekend could all do the job, but most that I see, and are winning in the UK could not possibly go into a large area and round up the herd of sheep and bring them down to the farm. Their coats are so big and fluffy, the first briar patch they got into would be the last, as they could not possibly get themselves out of it, and as for swimming in one of your lakes, forget it as the coat would just absorb the water and the dog would sink and drown. And this has happened!!! Also the movement is so bad that they would not be able to reach the sheep in the first place. I had one or two bitches shown under me at Crufts this year who had difficulty in getting round the ring. Amazing, but true.

It was real joy to judge the puppy classes, as they have improved so much since I last judged them in 1999.

And the best class of the day by far was the bitch class of 9 to 15 months. Not only did my best bitch (Ladykin La´Fantazija Love) come from this class, but if I had been allowed to place them as we do in the UK the second in the class would have been my second bitch, and the third would have been the third best. The bitch, who was placed third (Gold Zafira´s Geyser) was probably the best mover that I have ever seen in the breed. She did not win because the two I put over her were also superb movers with a slightly better breed type.

The senior dogs I felt better in overall quality than the senior bitches. With two truly outstanding dogs being placed first and second best dogs. The dog  placed first (Pretty Sable´s Flamme D`Amour) and my eventual Best In Show, was a most beautiful tricolour with an almost perfect head. His back skull was so well filled and the skull absolutely flat. With a well  rounded and filled foreface, lovely almond shaped and dark eyes and really dark tan colour where it should be tan and very black coat where it should be black, he looked a real picture that was completed by a superb bend of stifle and shorts hocks. He would be able to do the job he was bred for, as I am sure that he could keep going all day, and then ask for more. The second best dog (Heidelind´s No Good For You) is already a famous Champion and is one I would love to campaign in the UK as I have seen a sable dog of his quality for a very long time. As he is a sire of my best bitch, he is obviously going to make his mark as an important sire as well. The second in this class (Phalling Snow of Phreelancer) I know all about as we looked after him for a few weeks before he came out to your country, and did we make a mistake, as from the quality of his children he is going to be one of the great sires of the world. His progeny group was probably the highlight of the whole show. And of course he is the sire of the Best In Show winner.

With so many Collies to judge and with such awful weather I was not able to say as much as I would have liked about each animal. With this number on parade maybe it would be better to hold the show over 2 days. Also with the bad conditions it was very difficult to judge the Collies and place them in a correct order of excellence. On a nice sunny day, I think that many of my placings would have been different.

But, of course if the show had been over 2 days then I would have missed the demonstrations the were held on the Sunday. I was most interested to see how good the Collies were at Agility. I have never seen a Rough Collie take part in this type of display in England. I have a feeling that very few Collies in England could actually do this from a physical point of view. Although I have seen Rough Collie that lives near me do Flyball and it always wins in races against Border Collies.

But I have to admit that I was interested in the tracking demonstration. Obviously with not much wild land in England there is no call for this type of expertise, apart from the mountain regions in Wales and Scotland, where they already have trained dogs to find people lost on the mountains. I believe that they only use Border Collies for this type of rescue work, but your demonstration proved that Rough Collie can certainly be just as useful, and perhaps even more so in some situations where the larger size of the Rough Collie might be better suited.

Please keep breeding Rough Collies of the correct type and temperament. Here just one or two could have better. I did have one young dog who thought that I might be very good to eat. I sent him out of the ring. I could not get insurance for dog bites while I was judging. Also one or two shied away from me. I realise that this was probably the first show that they had ever been to and I was wearing a big coat and funny hat, so probably to them I was quite frightening, and with these I tried to be more gentle.

All the dogs were clean and well presented, quite an achievement considering all of the mud and wet. But, apart from one or two handlers who knew what to do, the general quality of handling was not as good as we have in the UK. So many tried to move the dogs too fast, as a judge I do not want exhibits to take part on a race. A nice steady but quick movement is what I want. When the dog moves too fast it is unbalanced and the movement is not true, and on wet ground they also tend to slip and slide. It might be an idea to set up training classes for handling dogs in the ring. It is important that exhibitors learn to get the very best out of the dogs they are handling.

Finally a very big thank you to Eija and all her helpers who made this such a memorable weekend for me, and I hope every one who was there. I must not forget to thank my interpreter Carl-Johan who with your Chairman Eero and his friend who met me at the airport and fed me at the hotel after the show had finished.

Finally it was pity that Barbara was not able to come and see you, but small planes are not good and on this occasion the weather was most Barbara unfriendly. But she sends you all her best wishes and hopes to see you all next time

ACP EVENT 2001

It was a great honour to be invited to visit and assess so many Corydon related Collies. many thanks to all the people who worked so hard to make the weekend unforgettable one for me, and I hope, a wonderful one for all the Corydon enthusiasts in Finland!

I was amazed at the number of people and collies present – more than average UK championship show! The breeder and progeny classes were overwhelming in size and quality – in both cases the enormous ring was overflowing!

My parents had said that they were disappointed in the quantity and colour of the blue merle 2 years ago, but the influence of one dog has changed that. I was impressed with the quality of heads, the strong bone, and excellent construction as well as the clear blue colouring of Fargo's (Phalling Snow of Phreelancer) children. Yes, they are young yet, but what an exciting future for blue merles in Finland! The colour classes were full of rich sables, jet-black tricolours and clear blues – a joy to see!

I was very excited by some of the puppies. Scottail Excalibur would be welcome in our kennel, with Frosty´s solidity and elegance. Sandcastle's Private Smile had a beautiful expression and Carnoustie's Alone A Star had the most wonderful balance and colour.

The young male Carnoustie's Will Do Impact had the most wonderful moulding foreface and correct head but was just beaten by the better-balanced shape and performance of the veteran FIN CH Kangasvuokon James Dean.

In bitches Heidelind´s Xpress Your feelings, a beautiful, feminine bitch of the highest quality was unfortunate to meet the eventual Event Winner FIN EST CH Black Elles Merry Miracle. What a wonderful bitch! She had a perfect head, beautifully balanced and moulded without a trace of depth. It was on a par with our Kittycat and Whisper Willow. She was a feminine size and so elegant too – when I first saw her, my heart skipped a beat!

Overall, I could definitely see a common type – in construction, rich colour and tight ear carriage. Heads were not always true type, with a lot of deep skulls and sliding stops. Quality heads were rare and really shone through.

The bags of prizes up to 5th in each class were a lovely touch. The dinner at the end of the day was a super occasion, and I was left speechless by the gorgeous collie hair coat presented to me. I shall really treasure that, as well as the memories of the late night party, and the relaxed atmosphere the next day, when I showed videos and answered questions.

Oh, I think it might have been rained, but I was too busy enjoying all the wonderful collies to notice! Once again, thank you to every one!

ACP HAPPENING 1999

We have been priviledged to look at Collies in many beautiful places around the world, but we can honestly say that the setting for the ACP event was the most beautiful we have ever seen. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left, it was sheer pleasure. We want to thank all the hard-working people who organized this event so perfectly. It was wonderful that the weather co-operated as well and we hope thet everybody enjoyed as much as we did.

We were delighted to find so many collies with the correct flat skull and neat, well carried ears. Confirmation and movement was also excellent in most cases, with just a few dogs carrying their tails too high and a few others who had not learned to "stride out" when moving. Heads were generally very good, but some were lacking in stop and few others were "built up" where the stop should be. We also found that while some dogs and bitches had correct flat skulls and correct level forefaces, the two planes of the head were not parallel. The biggest problem was with expressions. This is a very difficult subject to explain, but we will try to do so in another edition of ACP.

We were very impressed with the correct texture of almost all the coats (no soft, fluffy coats) and one of our most difficult tasks was to find the Best Coloured Tricolour and Sables. You should be proud of those really black and shiny trics and of the rich colours in sables - there are not so many so good in England.

Often in the pas when we had to decide on the "best over all" we have disagreed and argued! This time we were completely in agreement! The decision was made a little easier because the dog was completely out of coat, but he is obviously a dog with splendid confirmation and movement. On the day the bitch was just perfect. She has all the attributes we admire in a classic Collie - flowing body lines, a wonderful head and expression and really powerful movement - and she was in a suberb coat and condition.

On the 2nd day we were thrilled to be able to say "Hello" to some of "our" Collies who now live in Finland and we were delighted to see how happy they all were.

We found the discussions very interesting and we hope that we were able to help you with some of our thoughts and suggestions. It is very rewarding for us to know that there are so many keen, intelligent and interested young people in ACP. We hope that you will maintain your interest in this wonderful breed and that you will continue in the footsteps of today´s breeders, staying true to the classic Collie. If this happens, then we are sure that all our work will be in safe hands for the future.

Once again we want to thank everyone for being so kind and welcoming and a very special thank you for the wonderful "Corydon socks" which will keep our feet really warm in this winter and for many winters to come! Thanks, also to dear Leila Lemetti foe all her hard work in translating for us. We spent the most perfect weekend with you and we hope to see you all agin in the not too distant future. Meanwhile, we send our warmest congratulations to the clever breeders who have worked so well with the Collies we have sent to Finland since 1983 - we are very proud to be associated with you.
